The Lifestyle Wanderer

From being kids in love to young adults donning multiple hats, Jonas and I saw each other dream, plan, and conquer our life battles on the seven wonderful years that we’ve been together. When asked about the secret to our longterm relationship, I often say it’s because we’re neighbors.
Back in September 2018 at Basco, Batanes
Our weeknight jamming at the sari-sari store in between our homes is the main reason why we’ve developed feelings for each other. We also often see each other in our purest form - undone hair and clad in our comfortable house clothes with no makeup and accessories. Living a few houses away from each other meant we can rule out separation anxiety quickly. This also meant we can hang out to hearts liking by playing video games, walk in the neighborhood at night, or stop by the nearby convenience store to score our favorite chocolate.

Even though we regularly see each other, we also work on different passion projects on the side. He’s the Creative Director of Seaesport, an online community that covers all things Esports in Southeast Asia (& worldwide), and me being the founder of The Lifestyle Wanderer, aka my beloved lifestyle blog. These personal projects allowed us to tick off other goals in our list and promote individual growth. In my opinion, pursuing different interests and learning new things from each other allowed us to know each other more and avoid the burnout of being together all the time.

With our differences come our similarities. We both share a penchant for good food. It’s an unspoken language that captures us in a heartbeat. We always resort to delectable dishes - whether we want to immerse, celebrate, forget, or just hangry. We love to try new recipes and discover amazing restaurants wherever we are in the world.

Valentine’s day came, and we have the whole day planned out. We kicked off our morning with a visit to Arte Povera, an art exhibit that depicts Italian aesthetics through installations made with scrap pieces. He swung by his office in the afternoon to finish some work. During the night, we had an early dinner at a Japanese Tepanyaki restaurant and watched 1917. I'm glad we're able to file a vacation leave on this day because we’re able to dodge the horrible traffic and restaurant waiting time.

While food is one of our love languages, it can also be costly. During our Valentine’s dinner, we had fantastic Wagyu cubes alongside a 5-course dinner set. If I’m not mistaken, our dinner alone cost us more than P500 per head. That’s more than my daily budget daily already! (eeep) Because it’s a special day, we let it pass and instead focused on how good that medium-rare Wagyu cubes were.

Beef with Broccoli (and Mushroom) Recipe
A day after V-day, I decided to go out of my comfort zone to cook him my favorite Beef with Brocolli (and Mushroom). My mom is the bomb when it comes to creating tasty dishes, and this is one of the recipes I wish to learn from her. On this day, we went to the market to buy the following ingredients:

  • 3/4 kgs Beef (beef steak cut)
  • 1 can of sliced mushroom
  • 1 medium-sized Broccoli
  • 1 sachet of Sarsaya Oyster Sauce
  • 1 Beef cubes
  • Margarine
  • 1 bulb of Garlic and Red Onion
Here’s how we cooked her famous Beef with Brocolli (and Mushroom):
  1.  After cleaning the beef, throw it in the pressure cooker alongside the beef cubes and a fraction of the minced garlic and onion. Leave it on the heat for 25 minutes after the pressure cooker is under pressure.
  2. On a separate pan, sauté the remaining minced garlic and onion in the butter. Add the broccoli once the garlic and onion become brown. Don’t oversauté the broccoli. Once cooked, put them in a separate bowl.
  3. Add margarine on the used pan. Once melted, add the cooked beef and mix it with the margarine for 2-3 minutes. While mixing, add the sliced mushroom.
  4. Add the oyster sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  5. Lastly, add the cooked broccoli on the pan and mix.
I shared a serving with Jonas over lunchtime. While I super loved how tasty it is (it’s the bias in me talking), he found it a tad salty on its own. His workaround? Eat it with a warm cup of rice. I also shared this with my family because the dish can serve five to six people.

While I need to improve on my cooking skills, I’m glad I was able to make a day after v-day still extra special by cooking him my favorite dish. How do you make everyday extra special with your loved one? Let me know in the comment section below! 😊

I witness our home's evolution over time — from chaotic to quiet. Our house used to be noisy, with six of us laughing or fighting with each other over petty things. One of the few things that silents us is mealtime at home.

My mom is always in charge of preparing the food. Her Garlic Butter Shrimp and Caldereta get me every time! My role in the kitchen? I help her slice the ingredients so we can fast track the cooking. lol
A once in a blue moon complete family photo
As the years passed by, there were lesser people at home as each of us started pursuing college in the metro. Because we took turns in staying at a dormitory, our household's only complete on the weekends where it's also time to get baon for the coming week. lol Every time we come home from a week's worth of studying, we always look forward to mom's lutong bahay meals.

My mom's first Samgyupsal experience
When my sister moved to Japan for a career opportunity, it was noticeable how we shifted from praying to FaceTiming before meals. Most of our lunch or dinners are usually documented as a way of catching up with my eldest sister since she's away.

My sister made it to my dad's birthday celebration virtually
Come 2019, my family discovered the wonders of Foodpanda and Grab Food. At first, we enjoyed ordering food online because of its convenience. However, it was only a matter of time before we started craving our favorite homecooked dishes again.

Here's our current setup in a nutshell: Most of us finished our undergraduate studies and are back in our parents' home. Mealtimes are made fun again because we get to taste our mother's cooking more often, and we get to chat with everyone over meals.

My dad usually kicks off the conversation by asking, "kumusta ka na?". His simple way of reaching out to us breaks the silence in the table and gets everyone talking about how their day went. Add to that my youngest sister's neverending stories that entertain us as we enjoy our food.

Dad never fails to ask for a selfie with the fam before eating so we can update our siblings with our whereabouts haha
Simple bondings like this help deepen my relationship with my loved ones. In the day and age where gadgets make us unsociable, gatherings as lowkey as lunch or dinner with the family strengthens foundation over time. Just like in Chef Jeremy's video with his mom, their conversation on Filipino superstitious beliefs while munching on pork steak and fried chicken easily reveals their tight family bond. 💕

The house is starting to get chaotic again. Also, my sister's coming back from Japan this 2020. This only means that my mom will be required to cook Filipino dishes for my sister during the entirety of her stay. If only I can fast forward the time and devour on those dishes already catch up with my sister over mom's amazing dishes! 👅

I am not new to trying different hairstyles in the past. I didn't find contentment with my boring, straight hair which is why I switched to different hairdos through the years. It was fun experimenting with hair color, fringe cut, and perm until I got the looks of misunderstanding and judgments. All thanks to my friends because they helped me realize that self-expression should prevail more than anything else.

My different hairstyles through the years

Even if I ended 2017 recuperating from bad flu, I can still say that this year was one of the greatest years I've ever had because I experienced so many firsts. Different experiences were on my bucket list until the universe aligned and I slowly tick them off as the month pass by.

It's a great feeling to refresh the memories of my best year yet. I really loved 2017 so much that I had anxiety attacks as 2018 came closer. Now that the new year is already here, I'm left to making the most out of it and continue my life's purpose. #NaksPadeep

Growing up, I figured out certain attitudes that have been consistent with my life. One of them is my brand-consciousness. I used to believe that when a product is branded, I would receive a high-grade quality product in hopes of getting my hard earned money’s worth. By the time I was slowly learning the art of shopping, I found myself dumbfounded when there are items in the market that has the same quality but at a lesser cost. (I particularly saw myself in this situation the first time I shopped at Divisoria in Manila. haha)

Today, I still hail myself as a brand-conscious person. Though I try to avoid it, I make sure to keep this attitude in handy whenever I buy my necessities. With this, I get to be keen on the quality of my purchases and get the value of what I paid for. As a bonus to that, most of the stuff that I buy highly resemble my personal aesthetics.

It maybe normal for kids to make fun of others but this maybe one of the reasons why I felt inferior as I grow older. I was born having a disproportion body, making kids back in the days poke fun at me. (wow, tanda na lol) As I grow older, knowing that I do not fit the standard size of the society, this affected my confidence and feel less beautiful of myself.

Different campaigns from Dove Philippines inspire me because they empower women to be beautiful in their own ways. That real beauty prevails no matter how beauty magazines (before!) only feature caucasian-looking and modelesque women in their prints.

(I'm not saying that they are not beautiful, I'm just saying that prints now are way better because they advocate diversity and appreciation for all kinds of beauty are promoted as well.)

Be your own kind of beautiful is a simple reminder that I am admirable in my own ways. I do not need to be pretentious of what is called "beautiful" in this world, but rather be someone who's inspiring because of my uniqueness. Now, I learned to embrace my figure and flaunt it despite my imperfections.

Thank you Dove Philippines for remembering me as I embrace and express my unique beauty with this personalized gift set! (Love receiving personalized gifts!❤️ ) I'll always keep in mind to influence my girl friends out there to celebrate their real beauty as well and be proud of it. ;)
